Trimdon Utd 0 - New Marske 9
After a layoff, just short of two months the poor weather relented enough to allow us to play the cup game that should have been played a month ago. The weather however was bitterly cold with a fierce wind, and parts of the pitch were quite boggy.
The first half kicked off with us attacking into the wind, and the first few minutes were pretty even as both sides looked to gain an advantage. The first decent chance at goal came after some excellent battling from Danny who played in Conor. Conor's cross went to Frank who could only put the ball into the keepers arms. Trimdon had a great chance as the ball was played in from the left and looked to be a tap in for the Trimdon attacker, that is until Greg came in with a superb tackle to block the shot.
Joe looked like he had given us the lead when he outpaced the Trimdon defence and shot at goal, only to see the ball rebound off the post and then get cleared. the ball was only cleared as far as Danny who got the ball to Liam, and his cross found Joe on the back post with the simple job of tapping the ball into the empty net. 0-1 to New Marske after 12 minutes.
Some lovely football followed from us as we pushed on for the second goal. Frank raced away and the Trimdon keeper was forced into a good save as he tipped the ball out for a corner. The corner came in and seemed to avoid everyone until it ended up in the net, from a tap in by Liam. 0-2 to New Marske. Five minutes later we scored our third goal of the game as Joe played Frank in, and he ran away from the defenders before putting the ball in off the post. 0-3 to New Marske.
We very nearly scored another goal, as Jack hit a free kick to Frank, who played the ball out wide to Liam, and his cross came in, over the keeper and onto the bar. It was attack after attack as we pushed on trying to increase our advantage, with a number of chances going begging. Trimdon started to fight back and make inroads into our half as we struggled to get the ball clear against the wind, ending with a strong shot that was well held by Dean.
On 28 minutes we once more mounted an attack, and knocked the ball around patiently, with the ball eventually going to Danny who hit a nice shot over the keeper and into the net to make the score 0-4. A number of shots came in from us before Bash went close, ghosting into the box before hitting his shot narrowly over the bar.
There was still time for two more great chances from Frank but he wasn't able to increase the scoreline as we finished the half against the wind strongly.
Half-time: Trimdon Utd 0 - New Marske 4
Considering we were playing against a strong wind it had been an excellent first half with some lovely football played, which was very pleasing seeing as we hadn't had a competitive match for two months, and we were hopeful of more of the same in the second half.
Conor was replaced at half time as Ben Leaper came on. Within 20 seconds of the start of the second half we scored our fifth goal, when Liam attacked down the left, rounding the Trimdon defender and hitting a shot toward the goal and the Trimdon keeper. There didn't look to be any danger, but the ball instead of bouncing as expected stayed low, leaving the Trimdon keeper bemused as the ball rolled past him and into the net. 0-5 to New Marske.
Another minute later the score increased again when a cross from Liam found Joe, who ended up on the floor with the ball at his feet facing away from goal. he swivelled around while still sat on the floor and poked the ball past the keeper into the net. 0-6 to New Marske.
Shots by Frank, Greg and Liam rained in on the Trimdon goal, but we couldn't stretch our lead. It was all one way traffic now as Trimdon struggled to get out of their half, and it was 10 minutes into the second half before they made it into our half at all, only for it to be cleared back toward the Trimdon goal.
Hubby came off as Robert came on to replace him. More shots were taken but we weren't able to get them on target as we continued to push Trimdon back. We started rotating subs during the second half, probably to try and keep the players warm!
The seventh goal wasn't too long in coming as Danny drove into the box, evading challenges before putting the ball in the net. 0-7 to New Marske. More chances came and went before Liam won a corner with a great shot at goal. He took the corner and the ball caught in the wind and ended up in the net, 0-8.
Frank was trying his hardest to increase the goal tally but the ball just wouldn't go in for him as he missed a number of good chances. Joe coming back onto the field within seconds got the ninth goal as he outpaced the Trimdon defence and coolly put the ball into the net. 0-9.
The final whistle went (about three minutes early by my reckoning) as we tried to get the goal to take us into double figures, but it was a very good performance considering the lack of recent games, with some good football played.
